Unconscious Exploration
Featuring the Art of Cheryl Gleason

ARTHOUSE on R is proud to present the art exhibition “Unconscious Exploration”  at ARTHOUSE Gallery on historic R Street in Sacramento. Please join us as we feature the mixed media work of Cheryl Gleason, April 13 – May 6, 2024. The opening reception and opportunity to meet the artist is on Saturday, April 13 from 5 to 8 p.m.

“Unconscious Exploration” features abstract art works based on imagery, impressions and experiences of the artist during travels and vacations during the last three to four  years. The artist taps into the subconscious through non-objective and abstract imagery using a variety of mediums.

According to Gleason, “The conscious and unconscious mind is where thoughts, feelings, impressions and memories live. My non-figurative and abstract works reflect places I have traveled and imagery that has etched a shape or a color into my unconscious mind.  While every work of art starts with scribbles on a panel, eventually through color, shape, line, texture and composition these scribbles lead me unconsciously to a place I have been before or seen many times. Through those elements, abstract images emerge as landscapes of my unconscious mind.

Gleason is fascinated by creating multiple vantage points in a single work. Using “Birdseye view” and “elevation views” in the same painting, this creates interesting and dynamic non-objective art juxtaposing multiple vantage points for the viewer.

Gleason works in many mediums, including encaustic, upcycled and mixed media, and acrylic, however, she is particularly drawn to oil and cold wax, using them in the majority of her works. Whether working in sculpture or painting, Gleason strives to create harmonious color texture, interesting lines and mark making and an overall aesthetic to create a smile, feeling or story.

The artist/curator at Mills Station Art and Culture Center (The MACC), Cheryl Gleason was schooled in art at UC, Davis, and was fortunate to study with amazing instructors and mentors. She was most influenced by David Hollowell as a student and an artist.
