August 2017 – “Making A Mark”

August 11 – September 5, 2017

“Making a Mark” showcases bold, vibrant paintings that integrate color, free mark-making and fragmented collaged imagery from original photography and print-making work.

Nelson’s practice is inspired by a drive for excellence, “I strive for every painting to be my best painting, and work to overcome fear.” Indeed, the bold mark-making characteristic of her work requires a brave heart to execute the creation. She continues, “The paintings are acts of discovery, asking the continual ‘what if?’ I’m fascinated by the way one move or gesture limits the field, or suggest a new direction. The process is a dance between thinking and not thinking, balancing patience with spontaneity. It is an act of faith.”

Nelson currently lives in Oakland, California, and this is the first time her work has been exhibited in the Sacramento area.
