May 2017 – Animal, Vegetable, Mineral

ARTHOUSE is pleased to present work by regional artists Linda S. Fitz Gibbon and Shirley Hazlett, in a two-person show, May 13 – June 4, 2017.

Fitz Gibbons’s trompe l’oeil ceramic sculptures and Hazlett’s suspended silk paintings invite a close second look, as the works are not what they appear at first glance. These two artists uniquely work in their chosen disciplines.

Fitz Gibbon’s hand built ceramics portray the clash of modern cultural stereotypes and artifice with nature. This leads the viewer to not only question if the object is real, but whether it grows, is alive, and if comes from the earth, is it still natural?

Hazlett’s acrylic paintings on silk abstractly recreate the feel of a place or a fleeting memory. With reverence for the natural world, Hazlett conveys the sense of an evening sky, glistening gems, or flowing water. Her overarching concept is seeking calm and beauty in a chaotic world.
