Tarnish, Rust & Rivets
The Incomparable Work of Karen Burns
ARTHOUSE on R is proud to present “Tarnish, Rust & Rivets,” the incomparable work of California artist Karen Burns.

This exhibit will run from September 10 to October 5 at ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R Street, Floor 2, in historic downtown Sacramento. There will be an opening reception and opportunity to meet the artist Saturday, September 12, from 5-8 PM and an artist talk at 6 PM in the main gallery.
“Tarnish, Rust & Rivets” is a collection of curious paintings of curious objects. Burns is a master collector of antique and well-loved items teeming with story and history. Her studio feels like a throwback in time, with items that hold secrets yet masquerade as everyday objects.

Burns began her career as a photographer – chasing light and ideal compositions. Photography honed her composition skills, but she discovered painting allowed further exploration of color and texture. So, the journey of working in oils began. She finds herself still setting up still life compositions and chasing light, only with a paintbrush rather than camera.
Karen Burn’s work has been shown with distinction at exhibits such as The American Artists Professional League’s 97th Grand National Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in New York, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society Best of America Exhibition in 2025 and The International Guild of Realism’s Fall 2025 Exhibit. She is represented by High Hand Gallery in Loomis and For the Love of Art Gallery in Auburn.

In addition to paintings of luscious everyday rusting and tarnishing objects, Burns has more recently taken to a series of whimsical robots with very specific jobs.
