Path to Illumination
Featuring Kristine Bybee
ARTHOUSE on R, 1021 R Street, is proud to present the art exhibition “Path to Illumination” at ARTHOUSE Gallery on historic R street in Sacramento, January 10 – February 2, 2025. Please join us for this special showing of work by Kristine Bybee. The opening reception and opportunity to meet the artist is Saturday, January 11, from 5-8 pm.
Kristine’s paintings of rivers and mountains seek to illuminate the spiritual within the natural world and capture fleeting moments in time, sculpted with a brush. Her delicate application of gold, silver and copper leaf reflect the sacred relationships between the environment and ourselves.
The Scientific Periodic Table of Elements includes gold, silver and copper as essential elements, valued in both scientific research and in art. For centuries, artists have cherished their reflective qualities and luster to elevate storytelling and spiritual expression: Illuminated manuscripts are a prime example.
Kristine feels nature expresses herself through burnished copper grasses and silver aspen trees moving in whispered unity. She has witnessed many changes in the California landscape due to the effects of time and weather, noting that some have changed very rapidly. Revisiting places she’s painted in the past, she has noticed this change unfold and hopes to preserve them in her paintings for future generations to draw inspiration from.
John Muir said “all the world seems a church and the mountains the alter.” For Kristine, painting is her path to enlightenment. Like John Muir, who saw California’s mountains as cathedrals and ventured into the landscape to capture their majesty in sketches and verse, she strives to honor nature’s sacred places through her art, illuminating the path to a deeper connection with the world.
Kristine Bybee studied under Wayne Thiebaud and Fred Dalkey while attending UC, Davis and Sacramento City College. She graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design. While pursuing a career in illustration and graphic design at The Sacramento Bee, she continued her ritual of carrying a sketchbook to record her world of landscapes. In 2000, she began teaching courses in design, color theory and drawing at Consumnes River College. Since 2012 she has lead creative workshops at The Crocker Art Museum, inspired by their special exhibitions. She’s been exhibited by many regional galleries, including The Pence Gallery in Davis, The Foundry Gallery, The Solomon Dubnick Gallery and the Park Fine Art Gallery.
